I was channel-surfing over the weekend when I came across a show called, DC Cupcakes. Like the name suggests, the reality television series is about two sisters and business partners running a small cupcakery.
Ever since then, I've had a massive craving for some sweet, sugary delight! The thought of baking a batch of cupcakes crossed my mind but after spending ten minutes searching for recipes online, I resigned to the fact that I can never bake anything successfully.
And so I did the next best thing, I went on a hunt to find Singapore's irresistible cupcakes.
Over the past few years, a number of cupcake shops have been popping up all around Singapore and seemingly sane people line up for hours for the cupcakes but how do you know if it's worth the wait?
A long line does not necessarily mean that the cupcakes are good. So where do you go if you are sick of mediocre cupcakes and want to take a bite out of a cupcake that will excite your taste buds?
We've weaved out the bad and listed out the top three so go ahead and treat yourself to a cupcake today!
Swirls Bake Shop
Where: 8 Rodyk Street, Unit 01-08 (Off Robertson Quay) Singapore 238216
What: Swirls Bake Shop's mission is simple: to make the best cupcakes that you have ever tasted. Personally, I think they are the only ones who have actually brought American stye cupcakes to Singapore. Swirls Bake Shop offers 101 different types of cupcakes but if you can't decide what to pick, you absolutely need to go for the Red Velvet cupcake, it is to die for!
Check out their pretty website and say 'hello' to all the cupcakes. Be warned though, you will salivate and get hungry browsing through it.
Where: #01-02 Far East Square, 26 China Street
What: Popular due to its mix-and-match philosophy, you will be able to pick your cake flavour and match it with any butter-cream icing so if you are feeling adventurous, you can pick Nutella to go for say mandarin orange or even durian!
If you can't decide what to order, you can go for their popular choices such as "Nuts About Us", a Nutella base topped with Nutella cream or the 'Peek a Boo', a peanut butter brownie cake topped with banana butter cream.
If you are a student, take note that on Wednesday, you can get any cupcakes at $5!
The Marmalade Toast
Where: Ngee Ann City Unit 02-11 Ngee Ann City 391 Orchard Road Singapore 238872
What: A hidden gem in Orchard, this is what place I keep coming back to. I have two favourite cupcakes here. The Limonata cupcake, a lemon cupcake with vanilla icing, and the Cloud Nine, a coconut cupcake with cream-cheese icing. The perfect combination on a hot afternoon would be the cupcakes and the iced tea.
Come early if you are planning to give this place a visit, the cupcakes tend to sell out fast.
